Why Yukon Flats School District?

The Yukon Flats School District, with offices in Fort Yukon, Alaska, serving schools in eight communities, needs qualified, hard working, adventurous, directed, flexible, understanding, and resourceful teachers and other support personnel.

Our children in this district need teachers who believe that teaching is preparing children for the future, and who understand that the opportunity and joy of teaching is more than a job.

Our communities need teachers who enjoy living in the Alaskan Bush, and who appreciate and welcome the opportunity to live with native people as their guest.

Do you need a fancy hairstylist? Out here we cut our own hair or have a close friend do it for us. Do you enjoy spending every weekend in overcrowded shopping malls? Consider spending weekends snowshoeing or cross-country skiing under the biggest full moon you’ll ever see hanging over a spruce forest under a thick covering of snow during a long dark night above the Arctic Circle with the aurora borealis dancing in the sky.

Could you live without running water? Could you live without central heating? Many of the children in our schools do. Consider carrying water for your everyday needs and cutting your own wood to heat your log cabin. Also, there is the possibility of a honey bucket or outhouse, but most locations in fact have running water and central heating available in the school and teacher housing.

Do you need to be a member of a large staff? Some of our schools have only one or two teachers for all grades K-12. Our teachers need to be self motivated and energetic. The District needs teachers who can show professional courtesy and respect to colleagues.

Benefits include great medical insurance and retirement. You might make more money in other locations and in other professions. However, it’s not difficult to save your money out here, and if you watch your spending habits you can make the payments on your college loans and still have enough left over to give donations to your favorite charity.

Many of the communities in our district have local laws that prohibit alcohol being brought into the village. We call these “dry” villages and the district will not support any teacher who violates these local laws or uses any other illegal substance.

There are many excellent reasons why the right kind of qualified teacher would want to teach in this district. There are also many unique challenges such as the cold environment and rural life that would not be right for everyone. Applicants should feel the drive to teach and be confident in their ability and desire to be a teacher in an Alaskan village.

Interested individuals should mail, fax or email the following:
• A cover letter expressing why you are applying for a position in this district and telling us about your goals
• A current resumé
• Copies of all official or unofficial academic transcripts
• A list of references with addresses and phone numbers
• Evidence that you have a State of Alaska certification or that you
are in the process of applying for certification
• Three letters of reference
• University placement file if available
